First Grade
First grade is an exciting place to be. It is a time of new beginnings for each student. Adjustments are made to being in school all day. New friends are made and old friends are reunited. Much emphasis is placed on reading in first grade. The students spend much time practicing phonics charts and spelling rules, learning sight words, reading sentences, and finally complete stories and books. The students have daily reading groups that they are placed in. They then have the opportunity to practice reading orally, using expression in their voices, watching for punctuation, and just reading for fun. At the end of the school year, we read The Courage of Sarah Noble, a complete novel, and keep a notebook of the story.

Math work is done each day through a series of "hands-on" activities. Students learn addition and subtraction facts, telling time, metric measurement, and simple problem solving. Speed drills, games, flashcards, and other helps make learning fun.

Other classes include Bible, penmanship, health, computer, history, and science. Each class is taught with the emphasis that every student should strive to do their best. God's Word is our guide in each class. Proverbs 22:6 says, "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.'

Second Grade
Every day is new and exciting in second grade at Berean Baptist Christian Schools. The children are ready and eager to learn. As the year starts, the children begin with a basic review of many of their subjects. As the first quarter progresses, new concepts are being taught.

Second graders at Berean are taught and drilled phonics rules every day. This is the key to their advanced reading abilities. Reading groups are formed and used daily. They go from sounding out and reading words to reading with expression for comprehension.

Math is exciting. A use of many manipulatives makes the class more exciting and easier to comprehend. We begin the year with easy addition and subtraction problems. During a year's time, we cover double and triple digit addition and subtraction problems, telling time, money facts, basic geometry facts, and basic multiplication and division facts.

We include a variety of other subjects as well: penmanship, history, science, health, and spelling. We are privileged to have a computer class once a week, giving the children an opportunity to learn about computers. Art class rates right at the top in the minds of the children. Their art teacher gives the students a new project each week.

Berean Baptist Christian School is an exciting place to be. Not only do we provide a strong academic education, but we provide the students with a Christ-centered atmosphere as well.

Third Grade
New and exciting things happen in the third grade classroom where we build on the strong foundation taught in first and second grades. Bible class offers the opportunity for students to learn about Bible characters, heroes of the faith, and missionaries. We study Bible maps, and learn songs. The main emphasis of our Bible class is to learn to follow after Christ in all areas of life. In math, the highlight of our year is learning our multiplication and division facts. Flashcards and speed drills enable many to learn quickly and precisely. Learning to identify subjects and verbs in a sentence and then diagramming them is a big part of our language curriculum. A daily drill of rules help the students to put together well written sentences. The literature style approach is used in our reading class. The students read entire books and learn about the characters, vocabulary, and principles in the book. Some of our favorites are Little House in the Big Woods and Pilgrim's Progress. The study of great Americans and their contributions to our country is the focus of our history class. We begin with Christopher Columbus and end with the great evangelist Billy Sunday. Science teaches us how seeds grow and each student has hands on experience planting some and watching them grow in our classroom. We also study animal classification, and each student is required to put together a notebook of animals. Finally, in health, we learn how to have a healthy body and the proper way to care for it.

A young child is so eager and able to learn. In third grade we give them much to learn, but see many willing and anxious students absorbing all they can.

Fourth Grade
Fourth grade is a busy, exciting year of learning and growth! In Bible class we study Old and New Testament heroes. We learn a new Bible verse each week and a new hymn each month. We pray for and correspond with the Mark Landon Family - missionaries to Scotland. Math class introduces our students to division, fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, and basic geometry.

We also reinforce addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts. New words are introduced in Spelling each week to build and expand each student's vocabulary. In U.S. History, we learn about great Americans and events that shaped our country. We study the world around us by learning the states and capitals, the location of our neighbors in this hemisphere, European countries, and some African nations. Our class is abreast of current events by reading a weekly newspaper. In language, all eight parts of speech are introduced. Sentence diagramming, punctuation, and correct resource information skills are also learned. Our reading consists of character building stories, a biography of Abigail Adams, and a Christian fiction novel. Speed reading and comprehension are also encouraged. We enjoy books together each day as I read aloud to my class. Science is exciting with hands on activities as we learn about God's hand in creation. Fourth graders are great collectors and each one makes an insect collection. Good health habits and the study of bones and muscles are included in our health class. Neat penmanship is stressed and drilled. Our three field trips revolve around science, history, and nature. Class contests and competition add a spark to our year. Social growth, cooperation, learning, and love makes for a good year for all!
